What does the success of a publication depend on? Foremost, on the journal in which the article will be placed. Its characteristics directly influence whether the research will be noticed and actively cited by other scientists. In this article, we will consider the main aspects that should be taken into account in the process of selecting a journal for publication.

1. Relevance to the research topic
The first thing to do is to make sure that the topic of your article matches the focus of the journal. For this purpose, you should study information about the specialisation, target audience and type of research of the journal (e.g. empirical, survey or theoretical). You can find it on the official websites of scientific journals in the section "Aims and scope".
Also, in order to learn more about the specifics of the published material, it is not unreasonable to look at recent articles to see if your research fits into the current priorities of the journal.
2. Evaluate the credibility of the journal
Once you are confident that your research topic fits the focus of your desired journal, you should analyse its level of influence and authority in the scientific community. To do this, look at two key indicators:
- impact factor: it shows the average number of citations of articles published in the journal over the last two years. To learn more about this indicator, read our article on this topic;
- quartile: journals are divided into quartiles (Q1-Q4) depending on their ranking in a particular scientific category. We recommend reading our article, where we have explained in detail about the quartiles.
You can check these indicators using the Web of Science or Scopus databases. To do this, just enter the name of the journal or its ISSN in the search box. Then, you can read more detailed information about the scientific publication, including its impact factor and quartile.
3. Analysing the peer review process
Reviewing is one of the key steps in the publication process. It determines the editorial board's decision on the placement of the article. Therefore, when choosing a journal, it is necessary to pay attention to the type and timing of reviewing a manuscript.
There are several types of reviewing, which include: unilateral blind, bilateral blind, triple blind, open and post-publication. The main difference between them is the level of anonymity of the participants. In our article, we compared different approaches to conducting peer review, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages.
As for the timeframe, it can vary depending on the specifics of the journal. On average, the article evaluation process takes 6-8 weeks, but there are also exceptions. Knowing the estimated length of the review process will help you determine whether you will be able to publish your article on time.
4. Type of access to publications
Journals offer different models of access to articles that affect your audience reach:
- Open Access: articles are available for free to all readers, which increases their citation and reach. However, these journals charge authors a publication fee.
- Traditional Access: articles are only available to subscribed users. This approach may limit the potential audience, but at the same time, does not charge authors.
- Hybrid models: combine both approaches, giving a choice between open and restricted access.
5. Avoid predatory journals
When selecting an academic journal for publication, it is crucial to avoid so-called predatory journals - journals that masquerade as academic journals but do not conduct full peer review and often exist for the sole purpose of collecting publication fees.
Such journals damage the author's scientific reputation, their publications are not recognised in the academic community and are not indexed in authoritative databases. Predatory journals capitalise on authors by publishing articles for a fee without proper peer review or editorial standards.
Read about what types of predatory journals exist and how to recognise them in our article.
Choosing a journal to publish in is the most crucial stage of publishing, and there are a number of characteristics to consider. Careful selection not only increases the chances of successful publication, but also enhances the impact of your research in the scientific community.
