In order to successfully defend a dissertation for a doctoral degree, it is necessary to take into account not only the requirements for the research itself, but also for the accompanying documentation. Below, we will consider in detail the standards for preparing to defend a doctoral dissertation established in the Republic of Moldova.

Doctoral dissertation in Moldova: what do you need to know?
In the Republic of Moldova, the process of defending dissertations for a doctoral degree is regulated by the National Council for Accreditation and Certification. It defines a number of requirements for both writing a dissertation and the conditions for its defence.
1. Requirements for the applicant
In order for scientists to be able to apply for a doctoral degree, they must have a licentiate diploma and/or a diploma of postgraduate education, namely a master's degree or residency (this applies to medical, pharmaceutical or veterinary specialties).
It is also worth considering that if the dissertation is written in a scientific field that does not correspond to the applicant's higher education, he/she is required to pass two additional exams in the main disciplines of the relevant field at the institution where the doctoral studies were completed or where the defence is planned.
2. Dissertation requirements
In the process of writing a dissertation, it is necessary to take into account a number of aspects:
- topic: the dissertation topic must correspond to the priority areas of scientific research in Moldova and world scientific trends. It is approved by the academic council or senate of the accredited institution at least one year before the defence;
- content: the dissertation must present original scientific results supported by theoretical and experimental research. For applied research, it is necessary to provide acts on the implementation of results, as well as copies of patents, certificates or other documents confirming novelty;
- volume: the volume of the dissertation should not exceed 5 author's sheets (8 sheets for the humanities and arts). It is also worth taking into account that the bibliography, figures, tables and appendices are not included in this volume, but they should not exceed 1/3 of the work;
- language: the dissertation must be written in the state language (Romanian). If the applicant submits a reasoned petition and receives the consent of the academic council, it can be written in Russian or another language of international communication;
- abstract: the volume of the abstract is 1 author's sheet, including a summary in three languages (up to 1 page). It should reflect the main ideas, conclusions, scientific novelty and practical significance of the dissertation.
3. Publication requirements
To be admitted to the defence of the dissertation, the applicant must have at least 5 scientific papers on the topic of the work, published in peer-reviewed publications, with a total volume of at least 2 author's sheets. These may be:
- 2 articles (each at least 0.33 author's sheets) in peer-reviewed journals included in the international databases Web of Science or Scopus, foreign recognized journals or the National Register of Scientific Journals. Also, one of the articles must be without co-authors, and the articles must be published in different journals;
- 2 publications without co-authors;
- 1–2 messages on scientific forums in the speciality, including at least one on an international forum.
4. Primary examination of the dissertation
Before the official defence of the dissertation, a primary examination of the work is carried out at the educational institution's division (for example, department).
After this, the applicant receives a positive conclusion, which is transferred to a specialized scientific seminar or problem commission. They, in turn, evaluate the dissertation within two months according to the criteria of the Assessment Form of the National Council for Accreditation and Certification.
5. Documents for the defence of the dissertation
In addition to the dissertation and thesis abstract, the applicant for a scientific degree must submit an application addressed to the head of the institution, accompanied by the following documents:
- dissertation in printed and electronic form;
- decision of the specialized scientific seminar with copies of the list of attendees and the Assessment Form;
- list of scientific works signed by the applicant and certified by the scientific secretary of the institution;
- extract from the decision of the senate/academic council on the approval of the topic and the supervisor;
- certificate of passing doctoral exams;
- originals or copies of the most significant publications;
- positive conclusion of the department where the work was carried out.
Defending a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Sciences in the Republic of Moldova is a complex and multi-stage process that requires a high level of scientific training, strict compliance with regulatory requirements and a significant contribution to science.
